What Is a 3-Phase to Single-Phase Transformer?

 

In many countries, industrial and commercial mains are supplied as 3-phase power (e.g. 400V in Europe/Middle East/Africa/Asia, 415V in UK/Australia/India legacy systems, 480V in North America, 380V in parts of LATAM/Asia). However, a large number of loads—air conditioners, welding machines, ovens, control panels, imported CNC components, lighting, POS systems, medical devices and residential-style appliances—still require single-phase power.

This unit acts as the electrical bridge: it takes 3-phase input across L1/L2/L3 (+N if required) and delivers a clean, regulated single-phase output through optimized winding design, open-delta, Scott-T style or custom winding configurations depending on capacity and balance requirement .

FAQ

Q: Is this a phase converter or just a transformer?

A: It is a 3-phase to 1-phase transformer / converter transformer. It changes both the phase structure and the voltage level, so it is not the same as simply taking one phase from a 3-phase panel. For larger or unbalanced loads, a dedicated transformer avoids overheating and phase imbalance issues .

Q: Can it be used in the USA, EU, Middle East and LATAM?

A: Yes. Because voltages are customized per order, the same product platform can be built for 480V→120/240V (North America), 400V→230V (EU/IEC), 415V→240V (UK/Australia/legacy industrial), or 380V→220V (LATAM/Asia/Africa) .

Q: Should I size it at 100% of my load?

A: For 3-phase to single-phase conversion, we normally recommend selecting 20%–30% headroom above the continuous load, especially for motor starting, welders, compressors or inrush-current equipment, to reduce imbalance stress and extend service life .

Q: Copper or aluminum winding—which should I choose?

A: Copper gives better efficiency, lower loss and longer life; aluminum is lighter and more cost-effective for budget or stationary projects. Both are available from our factory .
